Lab for Child Development (Johns Hopkins University)

Who Can Participate

For 17 to 24 month olds

What Happens

This study will take place on a video call, live with a researcher! Clicking on the "Schedule a time to participate" button will send you to an online calendar where you can select a date and time that works for you. We will show your baby a series of videos short videos where the experimenter opens small doors on a toy box, looks inside, and expresses the emotion of “surprise” and “happiness". We are interested in what your baby expects to see in the box!

What We're Studying

Previous studies have shown that babies understand the causes of certain emotions from a very young age. Surprise is unique among emotions, as it is elicited by "new information" in the environment. For this study, we want to see how much babies know about this emotion - do they know one cannot be surprised multiple times by the same piece of information?

Duration

15 minutes

Compensation

Each participant who is in the required age range and participated in the study will receive a $5 gift card from Amazon.com within two weeks of completing the study.

This study is conducted by Lisa Feigenson (contact: dliu88@jhu.edu).
