Illinois Language Acquisition Lab (University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign)
Who Can Participate |
3-year-olds who speak North-American English and haven't done the "Learning to Learn Words!" study from our lab |
What Happens |
This study will take place on a video call, live with a researcher! Clicking on the “Schedule a time to participate” button will send you to an online calendar where you can select a date and time that works for you. The day before the call, your child will watch a 5-minute video and listen to a story from a magical mirror. We've hidden some parts of the story on purpose to see how much your child can learn from what they hear. Then, during the video call, your child will watch two videos on the screen while hearing sentences that go with one of the videos. We're curious to see which video your child watches more by recording their eye movements. The session usually takes 15-20 minutes, and the videos last around 5 minutes. |
What We're Studying |
Children learn new words in many ways, like from people around them, words they already know, and how sentences are put together. In our study, we want to see how much children can learn from listening to sentences alone. We show them a special learning video where key information is hidden, and then test what they remember the next day. This helps us learn how good young children are at understanding words and sentences just by hearing them. |
