Bayet Lab (American University)
Who Can Participate |
For 12-15 month olds. The voice cues presented in this study are in english so in order to participate your baby must be exposed to english speaking in their daily lives. |
What Happens |
During this study your baby will be shown image pairs. One side will have a partly covered version of a picture and the other side will have a scrambled up version of the picture. The pictures will appear for 5 seconds each. Before each picture, there will be one of two audio cues: one will be backwards audio, the other will be a voice cue that matches the picture. We will time your child's eye movements while they listen to the sound and look at the pictures! |
What We're Studying |
This study will tell us if hearing voice cues (such as “Look, a dog!”) help babies recognize partly covered pictures. We will compare where babies look when they hear speech to where they look when they hear speech played backwards. By measuring the time babies spend looking at the covered or the scrambled picture we can tell if they have “spotted” the picture. Ultimately, this study will help us learn how babies who are just starting to learn language might use the words they hear to better understand different objects in their visual world! |
