For 14- to 18- month olds

The study will take place on a video call, together with a researcher! Clicking on the “Schedule a time to participate” button will send you to an online calendar where you can select a date and time that works for you. During the study session, your baby will be seated on your lap, and will be showed images on the screen. They will be asked to point or look at the objects in front of them, based on verbal cues.

Infants see and hear people talking about objects around them every day (for example, saying “Look at the toy!“). This study is investigating whether their understanding about which toy the speaker talks about depends on how the word “toy” is said. Can they use small cues in the speakers intonation and rhythm to figure out which toy she meant? This will help us understand how infants understand the words that they hear: do they only pay attention to the words, or also to how the words are said?
