Language and Cognitive Development Lab (University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA))
Who Can Participate |
Children ages 5 to 7 years old. Only one child per family will be able to participate. |
What Happens |
This study will take place on a video call, live with a researcher! Clicking on the "Schedule a time to participate" button will send you to an online calendar where you can select a date and time that works for you. During the Zoom session, your child will see pictures in a slideshow and play a matching game. In this game, they will decide which things go together and explain why they match. For example, you child will see a picture of a pizza and a slice and asked to choose between two pairs of images that match this relation. In addition, parents will be asked to complete brief surveys that takes about 5-10 minutes, including demographic information, vocabulary checklists about their child’s understanding and use of words. For example, whether you have heard your child say the word “happy” before. |
What We're Studying |
In this study, we are examining how children identify and explain relationships between objects. Previous research shows that young children can recognize simple connections between things, but they often have difficulty understanding these relationships more deeply or using them to make analogies and solve problems. This study builds on that work by focusing specifically on what factors help children learn to use analogies, and whether their language skills support this kind of relational thinking. Your child’s participation will help us better understand how children explain connections between objects and how these explanations are related to early vocabulary development. During the session, your child will view pictures in a slideshow and play a simple matching game, choosing which items go together and explaining their choices. Parents will also complete brief surveys, including vocabulary checklists, to help us examine how differences in children’s word knowledge relate to their explanations. |
Duration |
30-45 minutes |
Compensation |
After you participate, we will email you a $5 gift code for Amazon.com within five days to thank you for your time (only one per child). To be eligible for compensation, we ask that you: (1) ensure that your child is in the specified age range, (2) make sure that your child is visible during the study session, (3) your child is able to understand the simple English instructions used in the task. Compensation is provided for participation and is not based on your child’s performance. |
