Developing Minds Lab (Skidmore College)
Who Can Participate |
For 5- to 7-year-olds. Only those who *did not* participate in the original "Awesome Animal Videos" study or "Awesome Animal Videos 2.0" will receive a gift card for their participation. |
What Happens |
This is a new edition of the "Awesome Animal Videos" study! All are welcome to participate, but we will only be able to compensate people who *did not* participate in either "Awesome Animal Videos" OR "Awesome Animal Videos 2.0." Your child will be assigned to one of two made-up groups of people, and will be given some fun videos that they can either keep for themselves to watch, or give away to someone else. They will also answer some additional questions about the two groups, and they'll get a link to watch their videos at the end of the study. |
What We're Studying |
In this study, we're interested in how young children act toward ingroup members, outgroup members, and people whose group membership is ambiguous. To test this question, we put children into a made-up group of people, and then give them an opportunity to share something with someone who is either in the ingroup, the outgroup, or an unknown group. Do children share more with ingroup members than with outgroup members? What about when it's not clear if the other person is an ingroup member or an outgroup member? Does the importance of the groups matter? Your child's responses can teach scientists about how group-based biases develop across childhood. This information can help us develop ways of encouraging children to be nice to others, no matter who they are. |

Compensation |
Within one month after you participate, we'll email you a $5 (USD) Amazon gift card as a thank-you! You will receive one gift card per child (even if they do the study more than once). The child must be in the age range for the study and be visible in the consent video for you to receive the gift card. Only children who *did not* participate in the original version of "Awesome Animal Videos" or "Awesome Animal Videos 2.0" are eligible for a gift card. |
