Children’s Understanding of Emotion: How Do You Figure it Out?

Children’s Understanding of Emotion: How Do You Figure it Out?

Child Emotion Lab (University of Wisconsin - Madison)

Who Can Participate

For 4- to 9-year-olds

What Happens

This study will take place on a video call with a researcher! Your child will be shown different types of information (like a thought bubble, a face) and they decide whether they would use the information when figuring out people’s emotions and behaviors. You will be asked to fill out one short demographic questionnaire.

What We're Studying

You and your child are invited to participate in a research study on how children figure out people's emotions and behaviors. More specifically, we know a lot about how people use facial movements to infer emotions and behaviors, but we want to know whether and how children use other types of information (like, thoughts, preferences, and desires).

Duration

30 minutes

Compensation

After you finish the study, we will email you a $10 Amazon.com (US) gift card. To be eligible for the gift card your child must be between the ages of 4 years and 9 years at the time of participation, you need to submit a valid consent statement (both within Lookit as well as on the Zoom call with the researcher), and we need to see that there is a child with you in the consent video (both within Lookit as well as on the Zoom call). But we will send a gift card even if you do not finish the whole study or we are not able to use your child's data. Each person is eligible to participate to receive a gift card only once. Gift cards will be sent within one week of study completion.
