Many Virtues

Many Virtues

Research in Education And Learning lab (University of Virginia)

Who Can Participate

For 6-to-10 year olds who live in the United States or Canada.

What Happens

This study will take place on a video call, live with a researcher! Clicking on the “Schedule a time to participate” button will send you to an online calendar where you can select a date and time that works for you. This study will involve listening to statements about curiosity, creativity, or open-mindedness on Zoom and answering how much each of the statements sound like them. For example, we might ask your child questions like, "I like going to school. How much is this like you? Not at all, a little, a lot, or very much."

What We're Studying

Curiosity is often conceptualized as one of several intellectual virtues, a kind of love of knowledge. Along with other intellectual virtues, like open-mindedness and creativity, intellectual courage, and critical thinking, curiosity can be thought of both as something that motivates learning and as a higher-order goal of education itself, a key outcome in a system meant to prepare children to become lifelong learners. Because intellectual virtues overlap with each other to some extent, it is likely that they mutually influence one another. In this study, we hope to better understand how to measure these intellectual virtues in children and how the virtues impact each other.
