What did you think about their class presentation?

Development of Intergroup Social Cognition Lab (University of Wisconsin Madison)

Who Can Participate

For 4–6-year-old and 10–12-year-olds in the U.S.

What Happens

Your child will meet four unseen Multiracial characters who are asked to do a class presentation about their caregivers. Each character will only mention one parent either due to their choosing not to mention the other parent or a fire alarm interruption. After each story, your child will be asked how much they like the main character of the story, how honest they think they are, how often they think they will share secrets, and which crayon they would use to draw them since they are “hidden” behind a curtain and only their parents are shown.

What We're Studying

This study explores how children think about the ways that Multiracial children share their identities with their peers and whether their identity sharing impacts how their peers evaluate them. We know that adults more negatively evaluate interactions with Biracial adults when Biracial individuals do not disclose their racial background (Gaither et al., 2014); however, we do not know when in development this attitude emerges. Learning more about this topic can help support and welcome this growing population of children in the U.S.

Duration

15-20 minutes

Compensation

All participants will be compensated with a certificate of completion and a $5 Amazon.com e-gift card. E-gift cards will be compensated within 1-2 weeks of study participation time. To receive e-gift card compensation, we ask participating families to provide 1) a valid consent video, 2) ensure your participating child is between the ages of 4-6 OR 10-12, and 3) ensure the participating child is visible in the recorded video session. Please limit participation to one time per child.
