Did Owl give his friend half?

Child Language Development Lab (Yale University)

Who Can Participate

4- and 5-year-olds that are fluent in English (monolingual English speakers OR multilingual with 50% or more English exposure between home and school)

What Happens

This study will take place on a video call, live with a researcher! Clicking on the “Schedule a time to participate” button will send you to an online calendar where you can select a date and time that works for you. In the study, your child will watch short animations of Owl sharing things like cookies with his friends. After each animation, we'll ask them a question about the amount that was given, such as "Did Owl give his friend half of the cookies?"

What We're Studying

The purpose of this study is to explore children's understanding of expressions for quantities like "half". For example, if someone shares two out of three cookies with his friend, is he right if he says "I gave her half of the cookies"? We compare children's judgements of sentences like this with sentences containing the words "all" or "two" in various situations. Ultimately, we are interested to find out what children think "half" means, and how it relates to their understanding of other quantity expressions.

Duration
