What do the teachers think about these games?

Leonard Learning Lab (Yale University)

Who Can Participate

For 5- to 7-year-olds

What Happens

First, your child will be asked to select their age and if they are a boy or a girl. Then, your child will learn about two new games (the "Fleeb Game" and "Zoot Game") and two teachers. They will hear that one teacher holds gender stereotypes about the games, while the other believes boys and girls are both good at the games. Your child will choose which teacher they would like to watch them play one of the games. Then, they will play the game (a fun visual search task).

What We're Studying

As children start school, they may encounter gender stereotypes about different subjects (e.g., math, reading). One way they learn these stereotypes may be through teachers, who may intentionally or unintentionally communicate their own biases to students. How do children respond when asked to complete an activity a teacher believes their gender is not good at? Do children seek to prove the biased teacher wrong or do they prefer a more egalitarian teacher? This work examines whether children are sensitive to teachers' biases and how stereotypes shape behavior in a classroom context.
