Feminist Parenting of Young Children

Feminist Parenting of Young Children

Race and Gender Socialization Lab (RGSL) (Stephen F. Austin State University)

Who Can Participate

3-6 year-old children and their feminist parent

What Happens

Your participation in this study will include a) completing an online survey about gender socialization and parenting (e.g., Can you give concrete examples of how you discuss gender with your child?) and b) select participants will be mailed a book about gender, and asked to audio-record themselves reading the book and discussing it with their child. Recordings will be conducted on participants’ phones and uploaded to a secure, private link provided by the researcher. Filling out the online survey does not guarantee selection for the book portion of the study.

What We're Studying

This study helps us learn about why and how feminist parents discuss topics around gender with their young children. This is an important topic to research so we can design interventions to support gender-diverse children. Existing research has explored conversations that parents have with adolescents on gender, but research with feminist parents and parents of younger children is missing.

Duration

10 min survey and a potential 20 min book reading

This study is conducted by Flora Farago (contact: faragof@sfasu.edu).
