Who Can Participate |
For 12 to 14 year olds |
What Happens |
This study will take place on a video call, live with a researcher! Clicking on the “Schedule a time to participate” button will send you to an online calendar where you can select a date and time that works for you. There are three parts to this study. First, your child will look at pictures and answer some questions about chatbots and grownups. Second, they will compare and select answers made by different chatbots and grownups. Third, they’ll complete short tests measuring their working memory, verbal ability, and cognitive reflection. Each part will take around 10-15 minutes to complete, and the study will take up to 45 minutes total. |
What We're Studying |
Chatbots like Open AI’s ChatGPT have grown very popular in recent years. This new technology is particularly interesting because it summarizes many different sources instead of listing potential sources like traditional Google search. Previous research has shown that children place higher levels of trust in technology when it appears more human like, such as when it can respond as though engaged in conversation. Therefore, it’s important to explore children’s trust in AI chatbots, which excel at naturalistic conversations. |

Compensation |
Families of child participants will be compensated with a $15 e-gift card to Amazon.com. (Gift cards to other sites are not available, and the gift card is only valid when used through the US Amazon site.) This gift card will be sent via email within one week of participation. A child may only participate in this study once. To receive compensation, the child must be within the age range, be able to hear the experimenter and follow verbal instructions and be visible during the duration of the experiment. |
