Gurland Lab (Middlebury College)
Who Can Participate |
Children aged who are aged 9-10 and currently in the fourth grade are eligible for this study. Your child must primarily speak and be exposed to English to be eligible to participate, and you and your child must live in the United States of America. |
What Happens |
In this study, your child will read an age-appropriate digital story about air travel. After reading the story, your child will answer several questions designed to measure their understanding of the story. Your child will also answer a few questions about their experience reading the passage. Before your child begins the study, a researcher will read a child-friendly oral assent script aloud, and your child will be asked whether they would like to participate. Your child will only continue if they agree. Prior to your child beginning the study, you will fill out a 20 item questionnaire detailing your child’s attitude toward reading. |
What We're Studying |
This study examines how giving different types of instructions can impact children’s reading comprehension abilities and their enjoyment of reading. We are interested in how children understand what they read and how they feel about the reading experience. This understanding can help researchers create instruction that will hopefully make reading more enjoyable and more effective for children. |
