Child Learning and Development (CHILD) Lab (University of Southern California (USC))
Who Can Participate |
For children that are 2 years old (24 to 36 months old) who are learning English at home. Participants must be located in the United States and hearing English speech at least 40% of the time. Each child may only participate in this study once. |
What Happens |
Your child will watch a series of short videos featuring some familiar or novel objects. Afterwards, there will be some quick questions about your child and their exposure to different languages and accents. The speaker will teach your children new words for some of these objects, and we will record where they are looking as they learn these new words. |
What We're Studying |
Everyone speaks in an accent, whether you think about it or not, and accents help people understand different backgrounds and origins. For English speakers, an English accent may be more familiar to you than a Korean or Iranian one. Adults often can comprehend and recognize speech spoken in an accent that is unfamiliar to them, but are children as successful? This study is about how children understand different kinds of accents. Children will hear speech in a familiar OR unfamiliar accent, and we will assess their comprehension of the speech. We are interested to see how kids can understand accents, especially unfamiliar ones when asked to recognize an object. |
