Quantitative Development Lab (Rutgers University)
Who Can Participate |
For 2.5 up to 6 year olds |
What Happens |
In this study, there are two games. The first is the music box game. Your child will be shown images that either do or do not make the box play music. After seeing a few examples, they will then choose which of two images they think will help the box play music. The images will include shapes of different colors and quantities, where the images that make the box play music all have something in common. The second game is a counting game where children will be asked to count as high as they can. Your child will need your help to progress through the study! |
What We're Studying |
In this study, we are trying to understand what kind of quantitative information children pay attention to and how this changes as they get older. For example, children might pay attention to the number of shapes in each image or the proportion of shapes that are colored blue versus orange. This is important because it can tell us about children's early predispositions for thinking about quantities, which is important for how we learn about and teach math. |
Duration |
20 minutes |
Compensation |
Within two weeks of participating in this study, we will email you a $5 USD gift card to Amazon.com, Target.com or Walmart.com (you will be able to select your preference). To be eligible for the gift card your child must be in the age range for this study, you need to submit a valid consent statement in English, and we need to see that there is a child with you during the study. Each child will only receive a gift card once for participating. |
