Who Can Participate

For 4-to7-year-olds who speak English

What Happens

This study will take place on a video call, live with a researcher! Clicking on the “Schedule a time to participate” button will send you to an online calendar where you can select a date and time that works for you. You will be asked to join your child in a live video chat, using a computer/laptop or tablet with a screen 10.2" or bigger. In this study, your child will be shown pictures of storybook characters and asked to describe what they think those characters are doing or what they would like to do.

What We're Studying

Picture books are a big influence on young children and so it is important to understand how children think about the characters they see in those books. We are showing children who participate different pictures so that we can learn about what types of faces children think look like girls or boys. Other studies tell us that lots of people think a character is a boy unless they can tell for sure that the character is a girl. We want to try to help all children see characters like themselves in the books that they read.
