What's in a Face?

What's in a Face?

Lourenco Lab (Emory University)

Who Can Participate

Participants must be located in the United States of America and be between the ages of 6-10 years.

What Happens

This study will take place on a video call with a live researcher! Clicking on the “Participate Now!” button will send you to an online calendar where you can select a date and time that works for you. Children will see different pairs of faces and be asked to answer questions about the individual based on the faces they see, such as "Who is really smart or nice". They will also hear beeps playing at the same time and will be asked to identify how many beeps they hear as a way of looking at how children switch between tasks.

What We're Studying

Previous research shows that people use different cues such as resources, gender, and physical attributes to make judgments about people before they even engage with them. This study will explore whether certain features of the face influence a child’s decision about that person and how they view them. Understanding how these facial cues can affect children's perceptions can help us understand how stereotypes (universal beliefs) develop from a young age and whether stereotypes are present in children.
