Where do people go on the ladder?

Where do people go on the ladder?

Social Thinkers Lab (Fordham University)

Who Can Participate

5-to-10-year-old monolingual English-speaking children living in the United States (i.e., children who only speak English).

What Happens

Your child will see a picture of a ladder and learn to place people higher on the ladder based on the things they have. They will then decide where to place people who speak different languages, for example, a person who only speaks English vs. a person who speaks both English and French. At the end, we will ask you (the adult) a few final questions about your family’s demographics.

What We're Studying

The purpose of this study is to get a better understanding of how children associate different languages and accents with social status. Prior research shows that adults view specific languages and accents as higher in status. We are interested in if children do too. We hope that answering these questions will allow us to understand better how children navigate their worlds and the different people in them.

Duration

20 mins

Compensation

As a token of appreciation for you and your child’s contribution to our research, you will receive a digital Amazon.com or Tangocard.com gift card to your email of $5. Rewards will be sent within one week after completing the study. To receive this gift card, your child must meet all eligibility, must be present during consent, and be present during the duration of the study. Please note: children can only participate one time.
