What will they tell about their day?

Harvard Lab for Developmental Studies (Thomas) (Harvard University)

Who Can Participate

For 6-9 year olds

What Happens

Your child will hear stories about 2 different characters. In each story, the character is either happy or sad, and learns an animal fact in school. Then, your child will choose whether the character is likely to share their emotion or the fact with each person they meet.

What We're Studying

Past research suggests that children are sensitive to different types of information and expect some kinds of information (e.g., secrets or emotions) to be shared with close individuals more than with people who are not close. We aim to investigate whether children expect a character to share a certain piece of information based on their relationship with the other characters. This study will help us better understand how children begin to think about norms of communication within close relationships.

Duration

15 minutes

Compensation

Within about a week, you will receive a $5 giftcard code (Amazon.com) by email once we verify your consent video and that your child is in the correct age range. To be valid, consent videos need to show the caregiver of the child who is participating. Your child should be visible during the study. Only one gift card per child is available.
