Who will give the right answer?

Project GARDEN (The University of Texas at Dallas)

Who Can Participate

3- to 7-year-old children and their caregivers who are participating in Project GARDEN and are able to understand and answer questions in English.

What Happens

In this GARDEN Study, your child will watch videos introducing a zookeeper, a person who uses Google, and a voice assistant named “Kita” and then decide who can give the right answer to different kinds of questions about these animals, similar to “Where does this animal live?” or “What does this animal need to stay healthy”? You will also fill out a short survey where you answer a few questions about your child’s previous experiences with voice assistants like Siri or Alexa.

What We're Studying

We are interested in understanding how children think about how voice assistants and different types of people give answers to different questions! We’re especially curious to see if children have thoughts about how different kinds of information sources (voice assistants and people) come to “know” or “figure out” the answers to questions.

Duration

20 minutes

Compensation

We will email you a $5 Amazon gift card within a week of your participation. To be eligible for the gift card, your child must meet all eligibility criteria (for example, be the right age for the study, already have participated in the first eight studies of Project GARDEN) and you must record a valid consent video on Children Helping Science. Each child can only participate once and receive one gift card.
