Which One Will They Get For School?

For 6- to 8-year-olds

This study will take place on a video call, live with a researcher! Clicking on the “Schedule a time to participate” button will send you to an online calendar where you can select a date and time that works for you. In this study, your child will meet characters who are going to a new school, where they don’t know any of the other children. The characters are buying new items for school and deciding between two options. We ask your child to predict which of two options they would buy and why.

This study explores how children learn to that objects can be used as social signals. Previous research shows that children use objects such as clothing to assume group membership, but it's less clear when children start to strategically select their own objects. We want to understand at what age do children start to think about what messages their own things tell to others.
