Leonard Learning Lab (Yale University)
Who Can Participate |
For English-speaking , 5-, 6- and 7-year-old children in the United States |
What Happens |
Your child will see and hear stories about students in a classroom! In each story, teachers will assign students in their classrooms to different after school clubs, like an “engineering club” and a “story club”. Your child will tell us how much they like or don’t like how the teachers assigned the clubs to the students. At the end, we will ask your child some questions about girls' and boys' interests. |
What We're Studying |
Sometimes teachers make guesses or assumptions about what a student is interested in, even if they have never interacted with the student before. For example, they may have stereotypes about what a student may like to do, given their gender. Do children think that teachers have stereotypes about children’s interests? In this study, we explore children’s evaluations of teachers who assign games based on gender stereotypes or not. Findings from this study will help us better understand how children think about the beliefs that teachers hold, as well as how children learn stereotypes themselves. |
Duration |
15 minutes |
Compensation |
After you finish the study, we will email you a $5 Giftogram gift card. To be eligible for the gift card and certificate: (1) your child must be in the age range for this study, (2) English is (one of) your child's first language(s), (3) you need to submit a valid consent statement, and (4) we need to see that there is a child with you during the experiment. If you or your child do not wish to complete the entire study or for some reason we are unable to use your child's data, we will still send you and your child a gift card and certificate. Each child is eligible to participate to receive a gift card only once; participants cannot do the study more than once for compensation. |
