Science Learning and Question Asking

Science Learning and Question Asking

Computational Cognitive Development Lab (Harvard University)

Who Can Participate

For English-speaking children ages 7 to 12 years old.

What Happens

During this scheduled video chat with a researcher, your child will take part in a short, four-part lesson about the human body. After the lesson, they will have time to ask questions to an instructor to clarify or follow up on what they learned. At the end, your child will be asked a few questions to check what they learned from the lesson and to learn about their experience asking questions.

This study will take place over a Zoom video call with a researcher and will last approximately 30 minutes. You may choose to skip any questions you prefer not to answer, and all responses will be kept strictly confidential and used only for research purposes.

What We're Studying

The purpose of this study is to understand how children ask questions to different kinds of instructors after learning challenging science content. By examining the number and types of questions children ask (for example, questions that seek facts or explanations), as well as how much they learn based on their answers to questions at the end of the study, researchers can better understand how different learning partners influence children’s question-asking when learning challenging science ideas.
