Infant Learning & Development Laboratory (University of Chicago)
Who Can Participate |
For babies 8 to 14 months who only hear English and no other languages. Must live in the U.S. |
What Happens |
Your baby will be shown videos of two people talking and then interacting with each other. We will measure how long your child looks at these videos. We will ask you to fill out a demographic survey and answer a few questions about your neighborhood. An optional survey will ask about the people your baby sees regularly. |
What We're Studying |
In a prior study conducted in a laboratory, we found that infants may have different expectations about how people who speak the same language will interact compared to people who speak different languages. In this study on Lookit, we want to see if we will find the same results using an online format. This study will help us understand how babies start to pay attention to social groups, especially whether babies think language is an important group marker. This study will hopefully also help us better understand the origins of language-based social attitudes. |
Duration |
15 minutes |
Compensation |
After you finish the study, we will email you a $5 Amazon gift card within approximately a week. You can earn an additional $5 Amazon gift card if you fill out an optional, external survey linked at the end of the study. To be eligible for the gift card, your child must not have completed the study before, your child must be in the age range for this study, you need to submit a valid consent statement, you need to live in the U.S., and we need to see that there is a child with you. We will only provide compensation for the first time you participate. We will send a gift card even if you do not finish the whole study or we are not able to use your child's data. |
