Bilingual little listeners: ¿Qué imagen es?

Bilingual little listeners: ¿Qué imagen es?

Cognitive and Language Development Lab (Montclair State University)

Who Can Participate

(1) Children must be 3 years old

(2) Children must be bilingual in English and Spanish (speaking and/or understanding both languages)

(3) Families must have access to an iPad, tablet, or large touch screen device (example: touch screen computer/laptop screen)

What Happens

This study is only for children who know both English and Spanish, and the activity will take place with both of these languages. This study will take place on TWO video calls, live with a researcher, on two separate days within one week. Clicking the “Participate Now!” button will take you to an online calendar where you can select a date and time that work for you for the first video call. The second video call session will be scheduled at the end of the first session.

During each session, the researcher will share their screen, and your child will play word games in English and Spanish. During the word games, your child will see two pictures and hear a word. They’ll be asked to choose the picture that matches what they heard by clicking on the image on their iPad, tablet, or touchscreen device.

They will also play one color/animal thinking game. In this thinking game, your child will sort pictures based on rules like color or animal shape.

What We're Studying

From past research, we know that growing up bilingual can influence how children understand and process words, and understanding two languages can shape skills like attention and flexible thinking. In this study, we will measure how quickly and accurately children recognize and process words in each of their languages, and how they perform on a thinking task. By examining language development, word processing, and thinking skills, we hope to understand how growing up bilingual influences these skills together and if word processing can measure a child's vocabulary. In other words, if a child taps a word that they hear faster, will they know more words?

Duration

Session 1: Child will play one word game and one animal/color thinking game on their iPad/tablet (15-30 minutes)
Session 2: Child will play one word game on their iPad/tablet (10-15 minutes)

Compensation

As compensation, you will be emailed a $20 Giftogram gift card. Giftogram is an E-gift card that allows recipients to choose their preferred gift. You can redeem your Giftogram at numerous online retailers or websites. Giftogram only works for US residents. You will receive $5 for the first session and $15 for the second, for a total of $20.
