Learn From Stories

Project GARDEN (The University of Texas at Dallas)

Who Can Participate

3- to 7-year-old children and their caregivers who are participating in Project GARDEN and are able to understand and answer questions in English. To join Project GARDEN, or to see which study your child can do next, visit childrenhelpingscience.com/garden, click "Start Now", and select your child's name under "Find studies for..."

What Happens

This study will take place on a video call, live with a researcher! You will see an online calendar where you can select a date. During the video call, you and your child will hear stories about different things. Your child will answer some questions related to the responses they heard from the stories (for example, how much do you think you learned from Ollie?”). We also have prizes for your child to choose from. We will then ask whether they would be willing to trade some of their prizes for some information.

What We're Studying

We are interested in children’s reactions to different types of explanations. In past research, young children have struggled to recognize when questions were answered with weak explanations. But those studies have used long questions and explanations that may have been hard for children to follow. In this project, we use simpler stories to examine how children respond to different types of explanations. The results from this project will help us understand developmental changes in how children evaluate different types of explanations, which will help us better address children’s developmental needs.
