Research in Education And Learning lab (University of Virginia)
Who Can Participate |
6 and 10 year olds |
What Happens |
This study will take place on a video call, live with a researcher! Clicking on the “Schedule a time to participate” button will send you to an online calendar where you can select a date and time that works for you. During the study, your child will answer questions about their experiences at school, such as how much choice their teacher gives them and what they think is important to do in school. They will also watch short videos of different teachers explaining a lesson and answer questions about what they think is important to the teachers in the lesson and how curious they feel. |
What We're Studying |
Previous research suggests that children’s experiences in school can influence how they think about learning and what is important in the classroom. However, we know less about how specific classroom experiences, such as the amount of choice teachers give children, are related to children’s beliefs about what school values and how curious they feel while learning. In this study, we will examine how children’s experiences in their own classrooms are related to their beliefs about school, including what they think is important to do in school and how much choice they experience. We will also examine whether children’s beliefs about what is important in school are related to how teachers talk about lessons and assignments. To do this, children will watch short videos of teachers explaining a lesson in different ways and answer questions about what they think is important to the teachers and how curious they feel. Together, these activities will help us better understand how children’s classroom experiences and the messages they receive from teachers are related to the way they think about school, learning, and curiosity. |
