What do you and your partner think about raising a child with autism?

Resilience and Intergenerational Social-Emotional Development Lab (Furman University)

Who Can Participate

Parents of Children aged 2-18

What Happens

Participation involves completing an online survey on Qualtrics that takes around twenty minutes to complete. One co-parent will complete a series of questionnaires including demographics about you and your child, an autism severity scale, scales measuring attitudes towards neurodiversity, measures of mental health functioning (including stress, anxiety, and feelings of burden), and finally a measure of social support. Participants are then encouraged to share the survey with their partner. Then the other co-parent will complete the same survey.

What We're Studying

We are interested in understanding the differences between co-parents mental health and attitudes surrounding their child's autism. This study will assess the degree to which parental attitude similarity will predict caregiver mental health, and whether social support plays a role in this relationship. We are also interested in characterizing the experiences of fathers of children with autism as they are significantly underrepresented in existing autism research.

Duration

20 min per parent (40 min total)

Compensation

Conditions for payment including parenting a child with autism spectrum disorder aged 2-18 and participation from both co-parents. Participants will have the chance to be entered into a raffle for one of five $100 Amazon gift cards (redeemable at Amazon.com). Emails must be entered into the survey to be including in the raffle. Drawing will take place when target number of participants is met, and you will be notified if you are one of the winners via email.
