Morality and Development Lab (Emory University)

Who Can Participate

For 6- to 10-year-olds located in the United States.

What Happens

This study will take place on a video call, live with a researcher! Clicking on the “Participate Now!” button will send you to an online calendar where you can select a date and time that works for you.

Children will be told short stories about hypothetical children and will be asked whether they think these characters are boys or girls. Participants will be asked to evaluate the intentions, traits, and social actions of the characters described.

What We're Studying

Children consider many characteristics to make sense of their social world, one being gender. Past research has shown that children will use gender to make decisions about who is smarter, nicer, and who they prefer to spend time with. Understanding children’s notions of gender can help us address stereotypes, which impact relationships, perceptions of others, and their own self-concept.

Duration

10 minutes.
