What's fair and what's true?

Knowledge in Development (KID) Lab (University of Louisville)

Who Can Participate

For 8- to 10-year-olds

What Happens

This study will take place on a video call, live with a researcher! Clicking on the “Participate Now!” button will send you to an online calendar where you can select a date and time that works for you.
In the first part of the study, your child will be asked to tell us what they think about how schools meet the needs of children with and without allergies. In the second part, your child will be asked their opinion about the trustworthiness of different sources of online information. Specifically, they will be asked whether they think an online video, search engine, voice assistant, or AI image would be best equipped to answer different kinds of questions, and which would have the most accurate information.

What We're Studying

We are interested in how children’s concepts of fairness and trust change as they grow. As children develop, we know their reliance on visual information changes how they approach decision-making. We want to see whether the visibility of information available to them impacts their attitudes surrounding the concepts of fairness (e.g., need versus preference) and trust (e.g., visual online information).

Duration

20-30 minutes

Compensation

Families of child participants will be compensated with a $5 e-gift card to Amazon.com. (Gift cards to other sites are not available.) This gift card will be sent via email within one week of participation. A child may only participate in this study once. To receive compensation, the child must be within the age range, be able to hear the experimenter, and be visible during the experiment.
