Harvard Lab for Developmental Studies (Thomas) (Harvard University)
Who Can Participate |
For 2.5-7 year-olds (30-84 months) |
What Happens |
In this study, your child will meet a character and get to ‘help’ the character by pressing buttons to open up rooms, each with different items inside. Before the study begins, your child will get a chance to learn about what happens when they press the buttons. Sometimes the character will exclaim something or show distress by crying. Then your child can ‘help’ the character by pressing the buttons to open up a room. Sometimes the room has a toy in it, sometimes there is food in it, and sometimes there is another character in it. |
What We're Studying |
Young children seem to understand what others want from their own actions. They also seem motivated to help others by giving them the items they want. This study uses a video game format to test whether children have different intuitions about what kinds of things people want, such as eating food, playing with toys, or being with others. Adults experience positive emotions when they see loved ones reunite, and this research aims to investigate whether children may feel the same way. |
