Clean Up With Collin!

6- and 7-year-old English-speaking children who can identify the color green

In this study, your child will meet Collin, a child who wants to go outside and play, but must clean his room first. Collin will ask your child for help! Your child will first learn how Collin wants his toys to be sorted into 2 boxes while listening to background noise. Your child will then sort toy animals and vehicles into the boxes based on Collin's sorting rules with no background noise.

Please note:
(1) The background noise may be bothersome for children who are sensitive to sound.
(2) This study includes activities that ask children to identify the color green. Children may still be eligible if they have other color vision differences, as long as they are able to distinguish green for the study activities.

If you have ever tried working on a difficult or time-intensive task in a noisy environment, you have probably found the noise to be distracting, and it may have even taken you longer to finish! There is some research that shows the same is true for children, and possibly with even more disruption. This study is meant to understand how the timing of background noise affects preschool children's ability to complete thinking tasks like sorting. If the timing of background noise does impact thinking task performance, this could tell us which every day environments support learning and which are more challenging for young children.
