How are they feeling?

Affective Cognition Lab (University of Toronto Scarborough)

Who Can Participate

This study is for three family members to do together: your baby, yourself, and another grownup in your family. Your baby should be between 6 and 14 months old, living in North America. For this study, it is important that your family live within North America.

What Happens

In this study, we look at how you discuss other people's feelings with your family members. We ask that you, your baby, and another adult in your family participate together. You will be shown pictures of children displaying various emotions. In one part of the study, you’ll be asked to talk about the feelings of the children to your baby. In the other part, you'll discuss these feelings with the other adult in your family.

What We're Studying

How we talk about other's feelings is critical to our social relationships. In this study, we are interested in how you discuss others' emotions in response to emotion-provoking items (e.g., bubbles, delicious food, and broken toys) with your family members. This will help us understand how we communicate about emotions!

Compensation

After you finish the study, we will send you an Amazon e-gift card ($5USD or $7CAD) in 1-7 days. To be eligible for the gift card, your baby must be in the age range for this study, you speak English, and both you and the grownup in your family provide verbal consent to participate in the study. But we will send a gift card even if you do not finish the whole study or we are not able to use your data!
