Boundaries of Social Cognition (BSC) Lab (University College London (UCL))

Who Can Participate

3- and 4-year-olds.

You'll need an iPad, tablet, or touchscreen laptop to participate.

We're looking for two groups of children: bilingual or multilingual children (growing up with English and at least one other language) and monolingual children (growing up with English only).

What Happens

In this quick study, your child will play a fun game in which they search for and tap on pictures of people and objects on the screen.

You'll start by completing a short consent process and providing some basic information about your family. Then your child will play the game. Afterward, we'll ask you a few questions about your child's background, including their digital device use and language experience. This takes just a few minutes and helps us understand each child's unique background. The full session takes less than 30 minutes and can be completed anytime at home.

PLEASE USE ONLY AN IPAD, TABLET OR TOUCHSCREEN LAPTOP TO PARTICIPATE!

Don't hesitate to get in touch at l.harris.lab.ucl@gmail.com if anything is unclear.

What We're Studying

Children growing up with one language and children growing up with two or more languages may pay attention to the world in different ways. We want to understand how -- and how those differences shape the way children take in new information. What we learn could help create better learning tools and support for young children, including those growing up bilingual or multilingual.

Duration

15 - 30 minutes

Compensation

Each participant will receive a $7.50 voucher via Giftogram, which can be used at approximately 120 retailers. Vouchers are sent within 5 working days. To qualify, the child must be 3 or 4 years old on the day they participate, must be visible in the consent video, and the study must be completed on an iPad, tablet, or touchscreen laptop. Only one voucher per child will be provided. You'll also receive a beautiful participation certificate with details on your child's unique language profile!
