Bilingual Learning Lab (Boston University)
Who Can Participate |
We're inviting Spanish-English bilingual children ages 4-6 who live in the United States to participate in this study! |
What Happens |
This study takes place over 1-3 live video calls with a researcher. During the study, your child will hear bilingual stories about characters who go on adventures with help from their friends. As they get ready, they learn about new tools and how they’re used. After each story, your child will answer a few simple questions and retell the story in their own words. They’ll also play language games in Spanish and English, as well as fun activities with numbers and patterns. When you click “Participate now,” you will be directed to an online calendar to choose the date and time that works best for your first session. Once you schedule your session, we’ll send you a consent form and a Zoom link. This study will include up to three sessions. After you fill out the consent form, we will let you know if you are eligible to complete all three sessions! Each session lasts about an hour and is designed to be interactive and enjoyable for your child! |
What We're Studying |
We want to understand how bilingual children learn new words and meanings from storybooks. Bilingual storybooks come in different formats—some use one language at a time, others switch between two. Despite these two formats frequently appearing in published books, we do not know which is best for bilingual children’s learning. In the sessions involved in this study, children will see different storybook formats and complete language games. By joining, you’ll help us understand how different story styles can best support bilingual children’s word learning and what language skills they use to learn! |
