Abracadabra! What is this now?

Abracadabra! What is this now?

Vision, Learning, and Development Lab (Temple University)

Who Can Participate

For 5 year olds who are located in the U.S. and speak English

What Happens

Your child will play a picture naming game. In the game a wizard transforms pictures of everyday objects in a way that might make them difficult to recognize. For example, he may transform a photo of a turtle so that it just shows the outline. Your child will see the transformed image flash very briefly, and they will be asked to say what they saw out loud. For instance, in the turtle example, they may be asked “Did you just see a turtle or a rabbit?” and they would have to say “turtle.”

What We're Studying

By the time children enter school, they have learned the names of many objects. We are trying to understand what kind of visual information children use to learn new object categories. Like whether they rely on an object's shape or individual details. Your child’s ability to label different pictures will help us understand what cues help children learn new categories.

Duration
