NYU LEARN Lab (New York University)

Who Can Participate

For children ages 14 months to 18 months who speak English.

What Happens

Your child will see pictures of objects, people, or animals, and will hear them named. We will be capturing your child’s eye gaze as they look at the pictures so we can tell what they are looking at.

What We're Studying

This study is about how well young children learn words they only hear at certain times of year, like at holidays, as compared to words they hear all the time. The goal of this study is to understand how children learn the meanings of words. We are interested in what makes some words easy to learn and other words more difficult to learn. Participation is valuable from both families that participate in Halloween or Christmas, as well as those that do not.
We know that children often need to hear words many times in order to learn them, but we know less about whether they need to hear them regularly throughout the day or year as opposed to hearing them a lot in short bursts, like around particular holidays. This research will help us understand how much and what kind of exposure children need in order to learn new words, particularly less-common words.
