Duke Identity & Diversity Lab (Duke University)
Who Can Participate |
U.S. born children ages 12-16 from multiracial and/or multicultural families. |
What Happens |
The whole online Qualtrics survey can be completed at any time. There are two parts to the survey that are all in the same link--one part for your child and one part for you. After filling out a consent form, parents will report some demographics. Then, the child will participate in several tasks that demonstrate their understanding of social categories, traits, and identity denial. They will be asked to complete a sorting task, a task where they respond to scenarios of identity denial, a switched-at-birth task, and to fill out a questionnaire that asks about how they learn about their race and/or culture. The parent portion includes questionnaires about how they share the following within their household: their cultural background, how fixed social categories may be, and how they may prepare for bias. |
What We're Studying |
The purpose of this study is to explore how parents of children from diverse racial and cultural backgrounds teach their kids about race and culture. Specifically, it will collect data on participants' socialization by means of essentialism (the idea that a group shares fixed and unchanging traits that define them) and colorblindness (the assertion that race should be ignored in order to promote equality) scales, which relate to their responses when their identities are questioned. We want to know how families may prepare their children for experiences related to their identity and background, especially when they come from more than one heritage. |
Duration |
30-35 minutes |
Compensation |
To receive compensation, the child participant must be in the age range for the study, both parent and child must appear in the verification video and fill out the payment sheet. On the payment sheet, input your child's date of birth when asked for a participant ID. You may be compensated up to $20 ($10 for the child portion, $10 for the parent portion of the survey), through an Amazon e-gift card (or from a different vendor upon request) via email within 5 business days. Compensation is given for each child participant. Please reach out to us if twin siblings are participating in the study. |
