Who Can Participate

For 5- to 6-year-olds

What Happens

In our study, your child will watch a brief animated video and answer a few questions. The video will introduce characters and describe a situation, and then your child will be asked about which characters are causally responsible for the outcomes.

What We're Studying

The purpose of our study is to examine how children reason about causal roles, particularly in situations that involve mental states, like emotions. We are specifically interested in how intuitions manifest in cases with multiple causal agents, as well as those in which an agent's lack of action leads to the outcome in question. In this study, we are looking at cases involving causal chains; wherein one agent's action affects another agent and that plays a causal role in the outcome. This will help us learn more about how children interpret causes and responsibility in situations where multiple actors are involved.
