Helping and Perspective-Taking

Helping and Perspective-Taking

Foundations of Learning and Knowledge (FOLK) Lab (University of California, Santa Barbara)

Who Can Participate

14- to 15-month-olds

What Happens

This study will take place on a video call, live with a researcher! Clicking on the “Participate Now!” button will send you to an online calendar where you can select a date and time that works for you. In this Zoom-based study, your baby will watch videos of two bunny puppets rotating pictures for a person. We aim to examine how babies think about how others see something and whether they prefer people who consider others' visual experiences.

What We're Studying

To interact with other people, we need to keep track of their perspectives. Some research suggests that babies and young children have difficulty understanding that their perspectives could be different from another person’s (e.g., a picture that is upright to them could be upside-down to someone else). However, this past research has not examined how toddlers think about perspective-taking as a social activity. That is, do they value perspective-taking more in situations involving small groups? The present study asks whether toddlers prefer people who consider the perspectives of their social partners.

Compensation

Participants will receive a $5 online gift card and (if requested) a certificate of participation, within 24 hours of participating over Zoom. To receive the gift card and certificate, the infant must be within the age range for our study. Each infant will only receive one gift card. We can compensate participants with an Amazon US gift card, or with an alternative online gift card. We'll ask you about what gift cards work for your family, and we'll work with our lab manager to get you a suitable gift card.
