What language should they speak in?

What language should they speak in?

The Development of Social Cognition Lab (University of California, Irvine)

Who Can Participate

For 5-7 year olds

What Happens

The study will take place on a Zoom video call with a researcher! Selecting the “Schedule a time to participate” will take you to a booking website, where you can select a time and date that works best for you. A live researcher will introduce your child to different places with rules on which language is supposed to be used. They will then tell your child short instances of three children doing activities and ask them if they think it was okay or not okay that one of the children did not understand the language that the other two children spoke.

What We're Studying

In this study, we are interested in understanding how children judge linguistic exclusion or not understanding what is being spoken around them, and whether this is affected by existing rules about language use. Previous research has highlighted the benefits of early exposure to diversity in childhood, such as a reduction in bias and greater perspective-taking skills. The data from this study could help us understand how children process some of the consequences of linguistic diversity around them, and how much the norms of language use affect this decision.
