How do thoughts change our motivation and emotions? (Part II)

Social Cognitive Development PennGSE (PennGSE)

Who Can Participate

For 4.5- to 5-year-olds who speak English and have participated in "How Do Thoughts Change Our Motivation & Emotions" study before.

What Happens

This session is the follow-up part of the study "How Do Thoughts Change Our Motivation & Emotions". In this session, your child will participate in a number game where they hear sequences of numbers and repeat them aloud in reverse order. They will also listen to three stories, each featuring two characters with differing beliefs or opinions about the same item. Your child will be asked questions about their thoughts on these differing thoughts.

What We're Studying

We would like to explore how children use their short-term memory and understand other people's thoughts. Specifically, we aim to learn how children hold and process small amounts of information for a brief period in their mind, and how they recognize that people can have different perspectives or opinions about the same thing. As the follow-up study of "How Do Thoughts Change Our Motivation & Emotions", this session will help us investigate how these abilities develop with age and how they relate to children’s understanding of motivation.
