Who Should We Invite to Our Playdate? For Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Developmental Neuroscience Lab (University of California San Diego)

Who Can Participate

For 3- to 6-year-olds with an existing autism spectrum disorder (ASD) diagnosis, who speak some English!

What Happens

For children with an autism spectrum diagnosis (ASD)! In this study, your child will meet a friendly Head Puppet who introduces other animal puppet friends. Each puppet promises to show your child a cool toy, but sometimes they don't bring one! Your child will be asked to share their thoughts about what happened and which puppets they liked. To participate, you'll schedule a Zoom session with our research team at a time that works for your family.

What We're Studying

We're studying how children with autism spectrum disorder understand promises and the reasons people give when they break them. During the study, your child watches puppets who promised to show a cool toy but didn't bring one, giving different reasons. We then ask kids whether it was wrong that each puppet didn't bring the toy and why they thought so. We are looking at how autistic children's sense of right and wrong develops.

Duração

The study completion should take about 30 minutes

Compensação

Families will receive a $10 Amazon (Amazon.com, US site) gift card within a week of participation for every child with an autism diagnosis ages 3-6, who speaks some English.
