What makes someone rich or poor?

What makes someone rich or poor?

The Development of Social Cognition Lab (University of California, Irvine)

Who Can Participate

For 5- to 10- year olds

What Happens

The study will take place on a Zoom video call with a researcher! Selecting the “Schedule a time to participate” will take you to a booking website, where you can select a time and date that works best for you. In this live video chat, your child will hear stories about characters who differ in financial status (i.e. rich vs. poor). After each story, your child will be asked to share what they think about the characters, such as whether they think the character was rich or poor when they were a child and what traits they associated with each character (e.g. are they lucky or not lucky?).

What We're Studying

Did you know that children can have interesting ideas about why some people are rich or poor? Previous studies have shown that children as young as 7 often think it’s because of things like how hard someone works or how they handle money (Yang & Dunham, 2021).

We’re curious to learn more about what children think about people from different economic backgrounds. In our interactive study, your child will hear short stories about different people and then share their thoughts on what these people might be like.
By participating, your child will help us understand how kids form ideas about others based on what they know about their resources. This information can be valuable in understanding how children navigate their social world and teaching children about fairness and different life situations.
Your child’s participation will involve simple, age-appropriate activities like listening to stories and answering questions. It’s a great opportunity for them to share their unique perspective and contribute to important research that could help us better support children’s social understanding of various groups of people.
