Let’s learn how people do their work!

Social Kids Lab (University of Wisconsin-Madison)

Who Can Participate

For 6- to 10-year-old children currently living in the U.S.

What Happens

This study will take place on a video call, live with a researcher! Clicking on the “Participate Now!” button will send you to an online calendar where you can select a date and time that works for you. In this study, your child will see cartoon characters and hear brief stories about how those characters do their work differently (e.g., using their brain/hands to do the work; using technology to do the work). Then, your child will be asked some questions about what they think about the social status of these characters (e.g., "Who do you think is listened to by other people?").

What We're Studying

There is evidence that children begin to think about particular jobs–for example, being a teacher or a bus driver–early in development. Only recent work started to look at how children use different features to think about social status of different jobs. In the current study, we are interested in learning how children think about the social hierarchy of people who perform the same work in different ways. Studying these questions will help us understand how children begin to think about a key component of the social world, and contribute to efforts aimed at explaining work and jobs to children.
