Fun or Prizes? Thinking About What Helps Me Do Better

Social Cognitive Development PennGSE (PennGSE)

Who Can Participate

For7- to 10-year-olds who speak English

What Happens

In this session, your child will listen to four short stories, each featuring two child characters who are about to do the same task but prepare in different ways. After each story, your child will answer a few simple questions about how each character might do on the task based on their preparation strategies.

What We're Studying

Everyone wants to feel motivated, but people have different reasons for doing things. Some people are motivated because they truly enjoy what they’re doing, while others are motivated by rewards or recognition. Studies show that different kinds of motivation can help people do better depending on the task. For example, focusing on the fun or interesting parts of a task can spark creativity, while thinking about rewards can help people work faster and more accurately.

In this study, we’re exploring how well children understand this idea of matching motivation to the task. By studying this, we can learn more about how kids think about getting ready for challenges, staying motivated, and what helps them succeed.
