Bumping Shapes

Bumping Shapes

What Happens

This study will take place on a video call, live with a researcher! Clicking on the “Schedule a time to participate” button will send you to an online calendar where you can select a date and time that works for you.

During the study, your baby will watch cheerful animated videos featuring colorful shapes moving across the screen. Some shapes will bump into gray squares and make them move, while others won’t. We’ll record what your baby looks at and for how long using your webcam.

What We're Studying

We’re interested in how babies understand cause-and-effect events. When one object bumps into another, sometimes it makes the other object move, and sometimes it doesn’t. By showing babies a series of these events, we hope to learn whether they can pick up on the patterns or rules that determine which shapes can make things happen. By measuring how long your baby looks at these events when the rule was violated or confirmed, we can better understand how babies make sense of these simple rules.
