Who should get the cookies?

For 4- to 7-year-olds

Your child will see a series of short illustrated stories about two characters and their cookies. After each story, your child will decide whether any cookies should be moved and, if so, arrange the cookies by giving them to the character who lost cookies or putting them in a cookie jar where no one gets them. Your child will also use simple visual bars to show how much each person is at fault and how careless each person was.

This study examines how children think about fault, carelessness, and responsibility when one person causes another person to lose something they value. Children will see different kinds of harm, including intentional actions, carelessness, and accidents. We are also interested in how their judgments and cookie-allocation decisions depend on whether the character who loses cookies agreed to what the other character was doing.
