For 6- to 9-year-olds

Your child will see some videos of someone tasting food their friend made. Then the person will respond with both speech cues (e.g. “it tastes good!”) and emotional expressions (e.g. frowning). Your child will be asked to rate how they think the food tastes based on the person’s reaction, as well as to rate the person’s intentions to be honest and to be nice.

In everyday life, we take in different types of communication signals at once. Many studies have focused on just speech or just emotional signals, but we are interested in how children interpret both at the same time! In this study, we are looking at how children use these signals to decide how good the food tastes and why the person tasting the food reacted the way they did (i.e. to be honest or nice).

After you participate, we will email you a US$5 or CA$7 Amazon gift card within approximately one to seven days. To be eligible for the gift card, (1) your child must be in the age range for this study, (2) you need to submit a valid consent statement, and (3) we need to see that there is a child with you during the experiment. We will still send a gift card even if you do not finish the whole study or we are not able to use your child's data. Each child can only participate in this study once.
